i’m sick and my fucking tv doesn’t work

that about sums it up. i’m assuming it’s because my old cable provider was bought by someone, but apparently i have to go and exchange my current set top box for a new one. so until i do, my digital tv service is fuxed.

i’ve also been sick with a damn cold/flu again the past couple of days. seems like everyone at work is either dead or dying. only went in today because we’ve essentially had no staff in my department so far this week. not-a-good-thing.

i’ve just got home and feel like complete crap. i’m attributing quite a bit of that to the -16 degree temps outside. i couldn’t muster up the strength to walk either to or from work today, and just the walk from the subway station is enough to knock me around at the moment. feel all weird and dizzy and my ears are ringing a bit. stupid weather.

the scene, again

i’m not sure i have the words for this at the moment but i wanted to share it in any case, so i’ll let iensu at from minamiasagaya to everywhere say it for me instead.

The song is sad, sad, sad and one of the most beautiful bits of sound I’ve heard in a long, long time. There’s a little bit of Alan Braxe, and lots of Annie’s Hearbeat and Hour Musik’s Your Life Is Beautiful. Then there are the strings from Robyn’s latest album, and right there at the party it sounds like she’s singing like Cyndi Lauper back in 1984.

it’s down the bottom there, in the side blog. it’s swedish, it’s sad, it’s super. you’ll like it. i do.

small victories, defeats

i had given up trying for ages, because nothing seemed to work, but it seems like my wireless network is finally working properly again. no more loungeroom full of wires. the other benefit is that i’ve been able to set the laptop up in a corner of the room where i can’t see the television, effectively creating myself a bit of a workspace. means i’m less likely to sit as i have been for the past four months or so peering over the top of the screen at the tv.

a couple of weeks ago i scored myself a nice bargain on some second hand champagne glasses, which i bought in preparation for new year’s eve. nicely, they’re also reasonably good for red wine. tonight, i smashed one. very disappointing.

coke’s 7 seconds of love: part the second

first post of the new year, woo.

a few weeks ago i posted something about coke’s argentine ad agency apparently saving themselves some time and money by pilfering someone else’s work. i’ve just read this article in the sydney morning herald, and after having a quick look back at rob manuel’s blog for an update, it seems that sky news and the beeb have also picked up the story.

the sky news interview with joel and pat from 7 seconds of love is here, and the bbc news article is here. seems to be causing quite the ruckus.

the scene

music here, in general, is rubbish. witness the popularity of basshunter. there is however, if you go looking for it, quite a good and quirky local music scene. i thoroughly enjoyed the irish folk stylin’z of stamp’n go shanty a few weeks ago, and just over the last week or so i’ve come across a couple of other acts that i thought i might share.

firstly, detektivbyrÃ¥n. you can find them on myspace here and have a listen to a couple of the tracks off their ep. i’m fond of e18 and dansbanan, both of which you can download from their official website, http://www.detektivbyran.net/ . i’m not exactly sure how to describe these guys. the closest i could get might be to compare them with lemon jelly, but without all the sampling. it’s kind of folk electronica, and it’s very listenable.

secondly, found because they recorded their latest work at the same studio as detektivbyrÃ¥n, is winding stairs. again, myspace here, complete with three tracks to listen to, and you can also download a couple from their website, although the tracks there seem to be incorrectly labelled. winding stairs combine some very pretty indie vocals and piano with slightly breaky drums and bass. funky and sweet. the track on their website labelled (incorrectly) ‘can’t see that far’ is my favourite out of these.

so it’s not all awful pop, schlager or the usual troupe of idol rejects. infact it’s quite a pleasant surprise when acts like this come to my attention, seemingly out of nowhere. reminds me of why i’m interested in music in the first place.
