Another of the small local boats tied up in Bogeviken. I was struck by the contrasting colour of this bright yellow boat and the red boat shed behind it. The evening sun really lit them both up.

Nina's grandmother lives in Slite. About all that Slite is known for is being the home of a cement factory, but there's still some beauty to be found in places where it doesn't seem likely.

The road between Slite and Visby crosses a small inlet called Sjuströmmar (Seven Streams) which feeds into Bogeviken. Aside from being a nice place to watch the sun go down, it's also home to all manner of birdlife and some of the local's boats.

Hopefully the next couple of photos will show off some of Slite's prettier side.

Gnisvärde wildlife

We came into the small fishing port of Gnisvärd looking for a place called Strandkyrka (Beach Church), but ended up spending most of our time sitting in and around the rocks of the small breakwater at the entrance to the port after spotting these little creatures running wild.

I'm no expert, but I'm inclined to think that these are Mink rather than Ferrets, given their home by the water and knowing that Gotland was once home to Mink farms.

They weren't terribly worried by the occasional tourist wandering on the rocks where they had made their home, and they grew less and less worried by us the longer we sat there. In fact, it seemed at some points that they were nearly as interested in us as we were in them.

We had only seen one grey and white one all day, until at the very last moment as we were considering calling it a day, it ran off and came back with its little twin here. It was really quite amazing, almost as if it had run off to get a family member and either brought it back to show us, or had said "Hey, come and have a look at these weird things that have been sitting here all day.."

Travelling some of the back roads on Gotland, you get a really good look at the countryside. Cattle, sheep, fields of grain and not 5 minutes down the road, the beach and tiny harbours surrounded by national parks.

It's (sort of jokingly) known as Sweden's Jamaica for it's island party side during summer, but there's much more to see if you take the road less travelled.

We've just come back from spending a week of our summer vacation on Gotland.

Unlike most people who come from Stockholm, we don't go for the champagne spraying summer parties and endless nights on the beach (although, those are great I'm sure) but because Nina's grandmother lives there. Since we're not concentrated on staying "where the action is" in the largest city, Visby, we're free to travel around the island and visit some of the smaller places.

Gotland has a rich tradition of fishing and agriculture, so it's covered in farmland and it's coasts are dotted with tiny fishing villages and ports. Lickershamn is one of these small ports, home to a few boats, some sunbathers and a small restaurant.

This one was taken some time after 10pm. Even though we're having kind of a late summer break, the days are still very long.

Björkviks Brygga

We had a car this weekend, which is sort of unusual for us, so Saturday we decided to head out into the archipelago and see what we could see. We were both hoping to get some nice low light shots after sunset, but my brand new batteries died after about four hours, just before the sun went down. Very disappointing, and has pushed up my camera upgrade schedule. A battery grip would have been really handy, as would some kit that's rated down to -10 ceclius. So, new camera next month i think.

Anyways, a couple of years ago I went out to Björkviksbrygga for a very cold and windy day shooting. Today we had beautiful clear, blue skies and not a breath of breeze, so we headed back out for another go.

It's a very calm and peaceful place when the wind's not up. The sun was shining down and warming us, but it was no less cold than last time as we got closer and closer to sundown.

This is one of the last shots I took before my batteries gave up and it's probably the best of the day. I have a couple of others that may see the light of day.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone. I still have a heap of photos from Summer 09 that I need to go through and upload, but here's a little bit of proof at least that I'm not dead, and something in fairly stark contrast to the previous rainforest photo.

Brottby, New Year's Day. -9 celcius, clear and sunny after fireworks in the falling snow the night before.

I hope you're all safe and well and that 2010 is a great year for you.

Rosewood Creek

I stand to be corrected here, because I don't actually remember, but I'm fairly sure this is a shot from the Rosewood Creek Track, near Never Never Picnic Area, about 15-20 minutes drive from the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre.

It's a bit of a slog to get around some parts of it, and it certainly doesn't help when what started out as a lovely, sunny day, suddenly opens up on you and you're soaking wet for the last half of the walk. Still, I guess that's the nature of the rainforest.

This was taken hand held in quite low light, so it's a little way from being sharp. This little pool in the stream was just above a small waterfall and seemed really inviting to explore further. Unfortunately the light was against us and we really needed to get to the other end of the track. A good choice as it turned out, rain and all.
